2021-07-12the eco forum global guiyang 2021was held in guiyangon july 12.as the host city, guiyang has attracted attention from both home and abroad on guizhou’s ecological civilization.
the nanming river in guiyang is regarded as a key ecological barrier to defend the upper reaches of the yangtze river. the treatment and protection of the nanming river is carried out according to guiyang’s guideline: prioritizing ecological conservation and boosting green development. meanwhile, it is an opportunity to showcase guizhou’s ecological achievements.
during the forum, we visited both sides of the nanming river, inquiring the story of the nanming river project and the technological innovation behind treatment.
it was a saturday morning. yan chunyan, a native of guiyang, was taking her child for a walk along the nanming river. she said that the nanming river used to be muddy and stinky, especially in rainy days. she refused to approach the river for many years.
the nanming river, passing through guiyang, is a tributary of the wujiang river and merged with the yangtze river. it boasts a total length of 219 kilometers, of which 185 kilometers runs through guiyang city. with the rapid urbanization in guiyang, the nanming river, like the mother river in other cities, is subject tosevere environmental impact.
due to the rapid population growth, the city requires more water resources. however, sewage collection and treatment facilities fail to meet the needs of the city. the ecological flow becomes seriously inadequate.
to restore the ecological balance in the nanming river, both the government and citizens have made tremendous efforts. however, it proves a great challenge to water treatment in densely-populated guiyang as it is located in a complicated karst zone.long distance, dense population, and heavy pollution. this is no proven experience to follow regarding the treatment of the nanming river.
experts who participated in the analysis of the nanming river treatment frowned on the traditional “cut-off and concentration” method. it would pose a great challenge to pipeline network construction and require large investment in land acquisition and demolition. with insufficient ecological flow as well as water transportation problems, the nanming river easily comes to a deadlock of “repeated treatment and repeated pollution”.
“with 15 years of r&d experience, we conducted a systematic study on the status and trends of the nanming river 9 years ago. finally, we’ve proposed the principle of appropriate concentration, on-site treatment, and local reuse. the concept is an alternative to the traditional technology route of “centralized” treatment and discharge around the world. the distributed underground reclaimed water ecosystem is actually an innovative technology system for sewage treatment and resource utilization”, said cweg president dr. feng hou.
guiyang has built 16 distributed underground reclaimed water plants and upgraded 5 plants along the nanming river. meanwhile, the city has carried out river ecological restoration and landscaping of 120 kilometers. a black and smelly river becomes clear again, welcoming the return of water lives and citizens. in 2020, the water quality of the river remained grade iii for more than 5 months. no dredging is required for 7 years. the nanming river has become a role model for the treatment of “mother rivers”, winning the recognition of multiple government ministries and commissions.
the nanming river treatment model is regarded as a successful and innovative application of thecity-wide distributed underground reclaimed water ecosystem for the first time in the world. it realizes the integration of treatment plants, pipeline networks, rivers and lakes.
in april 2021, the distributed underground reclaimed water ecosystem was rated as world-class level by a team of academicians and experts. in august 2020, the system won the second prize of national technical invention. thanks to the successful application of the nanming river model, the distributed underground reclaimed water ecosystem has been widely duplicated across china. the system has been implemented in 21 provinces and cities with a total capacity of about 3 million tons per day, ranking first in asia.
“the distributed underground reclaimed water ecosystem is a product of the nanming river project. the system features multiple advantages: reasonable design and high collection efficiency; low investment and cost; 100% utilization of water resources and land resources, significantly improving the urban environment; advocating green and low carbon lifestyle and ecological security”, said hou feng.
after continuous innovation and application, the distributed underground reclaimed water ecosystem has become efficient in utilizing above ground and underground space. it features cutting-edge biological treatment technology, biological air purification technology, and a digital intelligent control system to ensure everything operates safely and stably. the asian development bank speaks highly of the system, believing the comprehensive water environment treatment model is the future for china and even the world.
yan chunyan said, “now the nanming river is back to what it was when i was a child, and it’s even better than before. the walking path is long and flat. i bring my child here as long as i am available, telling him about the plantation and birds by the river. better environment, better mood.”
“we must not only purify water but also restore the biodiversity of the nanming river. ultimately, we will improve the water quality as a whole. through the secondary development of sewage resources, we seek to realize the value of ecological products”, said gao lin, general manager of cweg guizhou branch.
