2016-07-18on july 11th, the tongzhou district water authority announced that the main structure of the beijing’s largest underground wwtp - bishui wwtp, was completed. the renovated plant occupies less than 40% of the original site, with treatment capacity increasing by over 80%. after the new wwtp comes into service at the end of october, it will become the largest source of recycled water in tongzhou new town, and at the same time, reduce wastewater directly discharged into the north canal.
beijing bishui wwtp was the largest wwtp in tongzhou district. with a capacity of 100,000 t/d, the plant was designed to treat wastewater collected from an area of 460,000 sq.km., including most of the area to the west to the north canal.
however, as a result of rapid urbanization, population and the number of houses in the treatment area of the plant have increased greatly, producing wastewater beyond the capacity of the plant. on the other hand, in 2012, beijing released its new effluent standards which the plant cannot meet. given the above, the tongzhou district government decided to upgrade bishui wwtp. to reduce effects on people living around, the treatment facilities are all built underground.
according to the person in charge at tongzhou district government, the wwtp still works during the renovation. “we divided the original plant into two parts, one for renovation, and the other keeps working. some temporary treatment stations have been built around the urban area, to ensure wastewater treatment during the renovation,” he said.
on july 11th, the reporters came to the wwtp, and saw that the original aeration pond had been divided into two parts by a cofferdam filled with sand. the 133 mu (roughly 8.9 ha.) northern pond was under renovation, and the remaining 220 mu (roughly 14.8 ha.) southern pond was still working.
the renovation is composed of over 100 m2 of ground facilities and over 40,000 m2 underground facilities. at present, the main structure has been completed. next, equipment will be installed underground.
“that means, we will treat more wastewater on less land.” the person in charge at tongzhou district government said that the renovation mainly relies on cweg’s independently developed underground wwtp technology with the advantages of “eco-friendliness, land intensiveness and resource utilization”, which increases treatment capacity by 80%, saves 66% land through underground design, and improves local environmental quality through zero odor emission. the renovated wwtp is designed to treat 180,000 tons of wastewater and produce 80,000 tons of recycled water per day, with effluent meeting beijing""s wastewater treatment standards. after the renovated wwtp is completed, the southern aeration pond will be replaced by an ecological theme park and the first environmental science education base in beijing.
at present, the new wwtp is 70% completed, and is expected to come into service at the end of october 2016, when 84% of domestic wastewater produced by tongzhou will be treated by it. as a result, groundwater will be protected, and water of the north canal will be purified. treated water will be discharged into rivers as a main source, and high-quality recycled water will be used for municipal, industrial and residential purposes, to realize the recycling of water, and at the same time, improve the ecological, investment and living environments of tongzhou.
