after two years of construction, bishui wwtp completed its upgrading yesterday, and is ready for trial operation. as the largest wwtp in beijing’s sub-center, bishui wwtp adopts a fully enclosed underground wwtp system, hiding under a wetland, a garden and an artificial river. while saving 230 mu (approx.15.4 ha.) of land, the plant has an increased capacity of 180,000 t/d from 100,000 t/d.
odor removal of the fully enclosed underground wwtp
located in the north of zhuanchang village, liyuan town, tongzhou district, bishui wwtp is embraced by the yudai river. yesterday afternoon, the reporters visited the plant. standing on a 400-meter-long cofferdam in the center of the plant, the reporters had a panoramic view of the whole plant. the south side is a vast pond with sparkling water, and the north side is a large piece of leveled land.
“bishui wwtp originally occupied an area of 340 mu (approx. 22.8 ha.), and was divided by this cofferdam into two parts.” mu zizhu, head of the construction management department, said that the 110 mu (approx. 7.4 ha.) northern side is used for the construction of the new plant which uses a fully enclosed underground treatment system. during the two years of construction, wastewater treatment has never stopped for a moment. wastewater is treated in the 230 mu (approx. 15.4 ha.) southern side, a part of the original 230 mu. “the plant was put into use in 2005. at that time, the surrounding area was very desolate, with almost no residential buildings.” according to tongzhou district water authority, the capacity of the original plant is 100,000 m3/d, which was quite enough to treat wastewater produced in an area of 46 sq.km.
however, as a result of rapid urbanization, more and more residential buildings and business districts have sprung up, greatly increasing the quantities of wastewater. over the past years, bishui wwtp has been running at full capacity. the growing prosperity of liyuan has greatly shortened the distance between the plant and residential communities. it’s time for the plant to be renovated.
the main structure was completed within 98 days.
a passage opening in the north of the plant leads to the cool underground area. grated tanks, sedimentation tanks, biochemical tanks, and high-density sedimentation tanks are lined up. in the high-density sedimentation tank workshop on floor b1, half of the 16 groups of sedimentation tanks are being commissioned. the water is relatively clear, and will then be further treated through ultraviolet disinfection until it meets beijing’s wwtp effluent standard.
this underground wwtp was built on three underground floors. to the exclusion of floor b1, the other two floors are for equipment. “to make an analogy, the plant is a computer system, with the mouse and keyboard on floor b1, and the host on floor b2 and b3.” the person in charge said that such vertical arrangement can greatly save land.
“among wwtps with the same capacity in china, bishui wwtp is one of the most challenging ones in terms of construction difficulty.” looking back the past two years, mu zizhu signed, “it’s really not easy.” the biggest challenge is building a cofferdam to separate the old and new plants, and then drain the northern part.
cofferdam construction sounds easy, but actually needs extreme caution. divers were hired to realize accurate positioning. after the northern part was drained, its water level was 12 m lower than that of the southern part, which means a minor flaw may destroy the dam.
this was a tough battle that they must win in a tight time frame. the engineers and construction workers rolled up their sleeves and started. at the peak of the construction, 1,400 workers worked in shifts. within just 98 days, the main structure was completed. not long ago, bishui wwtp won the gold medal of the architectural structure great wall cup, the highest standard by which the quality of architectural projects is judged. after upgrading, the capacity of bishui wwtp will rise to 180,000 m3/d, nearly doubling the original capacity, but the new plant will save more than 60% of land and achieve zero odor emissions.
an open garden with a stream will be built on the ground area.
after the underground wwtp comes into service, a leisure park without walls will be built on the ground.
the renderings show that the 100 mu (6.7 ha.) park will not only be decorated by lush plants, but also equipped with plastic runway, basketball court, football court, badminton court, and other sports courts, becoming the first large sports area in liyuan. inspired by “sponge cities”, the park creates a “rain garden” where rain is collected by shallow green depressions, and purified by plants and sand before it finally seeps into soil to add to groundwater.
a stream runs through the middle of the park, parallel to the corridor on floor b1 of the new plant. according to the person in charge, the floor b1 will be open to the public, helping them understand how wastewater is treated. the southern part of the wastewater treatment pond is still running normally. at present, technicians have installed diversion pumps and pushers, and used activated carbon to temporarily eliminate the impact of wastewater odor on nearby residents.
with the completion of the new plant, the open aeration pond will end its historical mission. it will be drained, dredged and refilled with clean water, turning into a lake matching the park on the northern part. then, a beautiful water park will appear in beijing’s sub-center.
